Peyote is a medicine used by indigenous people in North America, in the US and Mexico. I was fortunate to participate in a peyote ceremony with elders from Mexico. When I returned home, this song and its lyrics arrived fully formed, telling the story of the peyote ceremony and following morning, a gift from the sacred peyote.
It has gained in popularity in the past decades and the plant is in decline. The Indigenous Peyote Conservation Initiative protect this important plant that provides such beautiful connection. Indigenous people were forbidden from using this medicine in the US until 1994.

lyrics
Far out, in my mind.
Soften the harshness inside.
See the rainbows coming down,
As we sit by the fireside,
We sit, transfixed, as our roots
Touch the earth.
We sit, picking out thoughts
That disturb
Me.
Tears are pouring down my face
I will forgive,
But never forget.
Try to forgive you
So I will be saved again
But I laugh and laugh
Until the next phase
Thought I heard a buffalo,
Rising in the bushes, ready to go.
See the birds flying over and into my head.
Not a thought was kept,
Cos we were not
Not going to bed.
She said,
All things must come to an end.
The only thing with 2 ends is a sausage.
So we laughed, and cried
And looked in to each others eyes
Sisters and mothers and brothers and fathers
Again.
